A little penguin trying to get some shut-eye, after a bit of platforming.

This project is me exploring what I can do with a pure platformer. This is a submission for Narrative Game Jam, where you have 11 days to build a narrative experience. Initially, I thought of a story about a penguin traversing between layers of dreams (via either sleeping, or playing a song on the gramophone which would wake him up from the current dream), but decided to go with this simple story due to time constraint.

I hope you enjoy Sleepless, despite the lack of any interesting narrative.

The background music used is called Waves made by FrenchyBoy. You should check them out. Sound effects were me combining public domain sounds on open game art.

The font used is Silver, one of my favorite.

All other assets are drawn by me in Aseprite.

Great jump and run had a lot of fun

What happens if I finish the game backwards when I already finished the game? (pass throughout everything but is everything black)

The Start cut seen plays again and you can still move, not sure if this is a glitch but its pretty funny. then I guess you can go back to the bed, but I don't hate My self that much.

I could complete half level on dark mode, I stopped on that jumboards with spikes on ceiling

I was watching a walk through when it was bright so I could see what it looked like, kinda cheaty but it made it a lot easyer

I was pretty pressed for time, so instead of a scene transition, I slowly turn off all the lights and particle effects. You can still perform all actions as if the lights were on.

cool btw why penguin?

I've been using penguins as pfp for a while, so it was a personal choice. Plus, they're cute.

Awesome music and sound design! Really lovely!

It's got quite a learning curve at first (at least for me), but it was really fun. Thank you 👍

Glad you enjoyed the game. The music is actually from a public domain song called Waves.

Great game dev i hope it was longer

Thanks. I mistook the Jam's duration to be 14 days, so I was surprised when on day 11 people were saying there's 8 hours left... This map / story is what I put together in that 8 hour rush.

(+2)

Oh for 8 hours it was amazing so well done

Thanks. I had the mechanics coded before this 8 hour mark as well as sound samples from past projects and the art drawn from days ago, so it wasnt too difficult.

Nice game! I really like the movement of the character and the particle trail!

I couldn't get through the part where the are 3 flamethrowers on top of each other with space between. I just couldn't see the path i'm supposed to go

Thanks for playing the game. I hope it was enjoyable.

For the flamethrowers part, you can actually stand on the flame throwers themselves. So a combination of a diagonal jump to the right, and a diagonal dash upwards to the left will take you up one flamethrower. If your reaction is fast enough, you could also stand on the platform, and perform a jump + dash to get on top of the highest flamethrower.

Ha, the diagonal dash makes things a lot easier. First time finished it with only horizontal dashes. Had to be creative in some places...
